Turkana Drought Emergency Off-take project 2006
"Helping pastoralists rebuild their asset base and capital after losses from drought."
Background
Turkana district like other regions in the greater horn of Africa had failure of the short rains in the period October –December 2005.This led to poor pastures and water availability for pastoralists and deaths in livestock were reported in many areas.
The government of Kenya declared the drought as an emergency and made appeals for in December 2005 for support to vulnerable pastoralists from the international community.
The TLDP team together with other actors in the country developed a concept note that was presented through the Kenya Food Security Steering Group to Sponsors.
Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations agreed to the request and contributed 93,972 USD for operations and another 66,000 USD for purchase of goats for redistribution to households who lost livestock to the natural shocks of drought, diseases and other related calamities.
Target areas
Central and south Turkana district
Beneficiaries
4500 households to sell goats and receive cash.
330 households shall be receive breeding goats.
Project period
27th April to 27th July 2006.
Overall objective
To improve food security of targeted pastoralist communities adversely affected by drought in Turkana District through the generation of income from the sale of goats and the redistribution of the livestock to vulnerable households
The project Specific objectives are:
- To prevent the further deterioration of the livelihoods of pastoralist communities in Central and south zones of Turkana District.
- To improve the purchasing power of vulnerable communities by improving their access to marketing opportunities in remote areas
Desired results
- Injection of cash into the economy of vulnerable pastoralists communities
- V ulnerable households receive goats to improve their assets base.
- Linkage of relief to development by using CAHWS in monitoring performance of the restocked families
Main activities
The main activities of the project include;
- Planning meetings with key players for beneficiaries’ targeting–LSP, DSG.
- Rapid assessment for targeting needy areas.
- Operational tools development
- Awareness creation and community mobilization and beneficiaries’ selection.
- De-worming, Branding, Redistribution of the breeding female goats.
- Visibility, photography of all the activities and sharing of information.
- Monitoring and support of the field activities by project team.
