Turkana Livestock Development Project Fase II
TLDP II (2005-2010) builds on the achievements of TLDP I, implemented during the period 2000-2005.
Objectives
To Improve livelihoods of vulnerable pastoral communities in the Arid and Semi Arid Lands (ASAL) through enhanced livestock production, increased access to water, improved marketing opportunities and peace building initiatives, through developing partnerships and strengthening local capacities.
Specific objectives:

Increased livestock productivity in vulnerable pastoralist communities in ASAL locations.

Increase access to potable water for pastoralists and their livestock in pasture potential areas of central and southern region of Turkana District

Improve the economic returns of pastoralist communities through increased marketing of livestock and livestock

Reduce the natural resource based conflict amongst pastoralist community in the Karamoja Cluster through peace initiatives

Promote viable and sustainable indigenous organizations, indigenous structures and local institutions, through partnership and capacity building.
Desired results

Improve livestock health and production.

Increase capacity of CAHWs to provide essential veterinary and extension services to Livestock owners.

FFS Methodology for Pastoralist systems is developed

Increased access of the livestock owners to veterinary medicines and vaccines through a decentralized and sustainable privatized delivery system.

Enhance participation of women involved and benefiting from the project.

Livestock related contingency plan in place.

The project receives 85% of its budget from the Belgian Survival Fund.
