Vétérinaires Sans Frontières helps the development of livestock in Africa

The aim of Vétérinaires Sans Frontières  is to improve the living conditions of vulnerable  people in developing countries who depend directly or indirectly on livestock by improving livestock keeping. In the third world, livestock often signifies the beginning and end of all life. Livestock plays a crucial role in providing food and for the income of families. Veterinary medicine, and hence the guarantee of a healthy herd, is often non-existent or inappropriate. VSF vets support local livestock owners with training, technology and know-how about animal production, animal health and using livestock to sustain and develop themselves. The activities are implemented after thourough consultation with all stakeholders involved.

Participatory approach

The aim in the longer term is to achieve self-determination and the continuation of the various projects by local livestock owners themselves, even if they start off as emergency interventions. Therefor a participatory approach is central to the VSF philosophy: structural solutions can only be implemented in close cooperation with the local communities in order to hand back their destiny to the people. We always work with a local partner or , alternatively, assist livestock owners to organise themselves. VSF focusses on supporting small livestock keepers in sustainable livestock development, while at the same time respecting the land, animals and the people.
