In Africa, millions of people survive thanks to their livestock. Their animals are a source of food and income. Livestock serve as draught animals and fertilize the soil. These animals constitute a significant social value and play an integral role in family life. Yet veterinary care is often inadequate. When farmers lose their herds to disease, drought or conflict, they lose everything: their status in society, their culture, their savings and their livelihoods.
The NGO Vétérinaires Sans Frontières Belgium improves access to veterinary care and livestock markets. We train local farmers, improve access to forage supplies and improve water and grazing management. By helping to care for livestock and increase animal production, we support local populations in their struggle against hunger and poverty. When animals are healthy, so are people!
